Le Marais is a historical quarter of Paris, long regarded as the aristocratic precinct of the city. Today it still retains many of its historical buildings.

Le Marais is located on the 3rd and 4th arrondissements of Paris, on the Rive Droite, the right bank of the River Seine. Today it is one of the places in Paris to admire and buy art. There are numerous art galleries in Le Marais along with trendy restaurants and fashion houses.
Since the 1980's Le Marais has also experienced a growing gay presence with the opening of several gay cafés, night clubs and cabarets. Such establishments are located on the southwestern part of Le Marais.
Le Marais also has a significant Chinese community that came to France during the First World War. At that time, France was shortage of workers due to the war, and China sent a few thousand of its citizens over, on the condition that they are not involved in the war. After the war was over, some of the Chinese have decided to stay on in Paris, and today you can find significant numbers of their descendants in areas such as Place de la République.
