Pont Alexandre III was named after Tsar Alexander III, who ratified the Franco-Russian Alliance in 1892. His son Nicholas II laid the foundation stone in October 1896. The bridge was completed in 1900. It is decorated with Art Nouveau lamps, cherubs, nymphs and winged horses.

Pont Alexandre III was designed by Joseph Cassien-Bernard and Gaston Cousin, who were given strict directions that the bridge should not obscure the view of the Champs-Élysées and the Invalides. It was built on the site of the original Pont des Invalides bridge which failed even before the bridge could be used.

How to reach Pont Alexandre III

Both the Métro and the RER have their train stations at Invalides, right next to the bridge.
