Rive Gauche (The Left Bank), Paris
Rive Gauche is the area of Paris on the southern bank of the River Seine. The name Rive Gauche means the Left Bank. This refers to the direction of view as the river flows westerly through Paris.

Unlike the Right Bank or Rive Droite which is considered the more elegant and sophisticated, the Rive Gauche is decidedly bohemian in character. This is where in the earlier decades of the 20th century a congregation of artists and writers. They live here because it was the only place they could afford at that time.
Among the famous artists, writers and philosophers who made their residence at the Rive Gauche included Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Henri Matisse.
